Over-the-Counter Diet Pills and Other Supplements for Children
A few over-the-counter medications, such as ephedra and dexadrine, promote weight loss by supressing appetite. Unfortunately, these products are either amphetamines or substances that work just like them. They can cause serious side effects such as high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, heart attack and stroke. These products are NOT recommended for either adults or adolescents! Other weight loss supplements (green tea extract, bitter orange, chitosan, chromium, conjugated linoleic acid, guar gum, hoodia, herbal extracts, etc.) do NOT promote weight loss. Because many of these substances are produced by companies that do no t have to meet FDA guidelines, contents may vary (what is on the label may not necessarily be in the product) and some products may contain contaminants. A few of these products may play a role in nutrition (chromium) or have nutritional benefits, but for weight loss, they are ALL a waste of time and money.
